The Enchanted Way project came to us as a single family remodel of an existing mid-century house. The decks were extended and we took cues from the original geometry of the home to create two non-parallel wings with an exterior open air court nestled between the two, and topped it off with a roof deck accessed by a spiral staircase.

A dark metal siding system was created to tightly integrate the roof with the walls and handle drainage. The project involved careful detailing of the siding and the roof ribs, the entry hall, and roof deck. The interior central courtyard is open to the sky, contains plants and provides light to the interior spaces, including one of the bedrooms and the main family room space and hallway. The rich architectural interiors are comprised of wood tones, color, and drama, all carefully curated by design experts, Lisa Schmitt and Christian Langmuir Foster. The landscaping is a classic California drought-tolerant design. The house has expansive views to the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island to the south.

Green Technology: Large stormwater cistern under the driveway to capture rain water for reuse as irrigation; remodel of an existing structure rather than a tear down; the trellises on the south facing elevation provide passive solar shading for the side of the building that has the most important views.
